Governor’s Island
Governor’s Island is the escape every New Yorker needs. Just a six‑minute ferry ride from the city, the noise fades, the pace slows, and suddenly you’re surrounded by trees, lawns, and open sky. It’s beautiful, peaceful, and absolutely worth the tiny effort it takes to get there. Plan for a full day — time feels slow on the island, but there’s plenty to keep you busy.
Cost
Governor’s Island is a classic “rent’s due but you’re bored” activity. Entrance to the island is free. The ferry is $5 for adults, or free before 11 AM. You can easily spend the entire day without spending another dollar.
There are opportunities to spend money — food, bike rentals, spa, etc. — so don’t expect your bank account to remain untouched unless you plan ahead. Keep reading for the money traps.

How Do You Get There?
You cannot drive to Governor’s Island.
A cab to the ferry is fine, but not necessary.

Ferries run regularly, but schedules change seasonally. Check the latest times: https://www.ferry.nyc/routes-and-schedules/governors-island/
I always buy a ticket, but I’ve never been asked to show it — proceed at your own risk.
ADA Information
Per the Governor’s Island website:
“All ferries going to and from Governors Island, as well as the grounds of the Island itself, are accessible to those in wheelchairs. Not all buildings on the Island are wheelchair accessible. Building 110, located next to Soissons Landing, is wheelchair accessible. All restrooms are wheelchair accessible. The Trust for Governors Island operates an accessible tram from Memorial Day to Labor Day, stopping at each ferry landing approximately every 30 minutes.”
Quiet rooms aren’t necessary — the island has plenty of peaceful, low‑stim areas.

Insider Tips
Bathrooms are glorified port‑a‑potties, but they’re clean. Use them when you see them — there aren’t many.
I’ve never gone in peak summer, but because it’s an island with lots of trees, I suspect it stays pleasant.
If you want a free day, bring food and water. The food prices are no joke — I skipped lunch once because my daughter’s meal was so overpriced.
Agenda / Nearby Activities
Governor’s Island doesn’t need a strict agenda — just go and follow your mood. But if you want a loose plan, here’s a great adult‑friendly flow:
Grab food near the ferry: Cava, Sweetgreen, Tacos No. 1, Just Salad.
Take the ferry and enjoy a picnic when you arrive.
Head to the spa (book ahead).
After the spa, stop at the restaurant/bar by the ferry landing for a drink.
When you leave the island, walk east on Water Street to 55 Water Street.
Cross at Pearl St. or the small alley/passage.
Walk one block north to the cobblestone street full of bars and restaurants — a perfect way to end the night.
